BOS GmbH actively supports the process of fire certification under EN1634, BS476 Part 22 and NFPA 252 (2008) and UL 10C (2009).
In Europe, most fire rated doorsets are produced using door cores where the door core has been tested in a range of door configurations and constructions.
The door core producers, such as Halspan, Strebord, Moralt and Blankfort have completed many tests over the years with UKAS accredited testing laboratory which allows a 3rd party independent and qualified fire consultancy to collect all of the necessary test evidence and using professional judgement, to produce a Global Assessment. The Global Assessment is a published document for door producers and many include evidence for steel frames.
The Global Assessment confirms how the doors are to be constructed and in the case of BOS frames, as the intumescent is in the door and not in the frame, the type and position to be used. The GA also specifies maximum door sizes and any limitation of door function, finish and hardware.
Some door producer have supplemented Global Assessments with additional tests and on occasions, if a door construction is not covered by a Global Assessment, the door producer may use an accredited fire consultant to produce a 'Project Assessment'. Naturally it is impossible to produce a Global Assessment to cover every door combination and therefore this can be a valuable route to follow if the doors are very unusual and bespoke.
With the exception for frames for glazing, BOS frames are the same for both fire and non fire applications. In the case of EN and BS, certification is the responsibility of the door producer.
The USA has a process of testing and listing a door frame as a single element. BOS holds evidence to the American standard of UL10c and we can forward a copy on request.
